POSITION TITLE: Principal I – Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (PHSSA)
 
PHSSA is committed to providing a rigorous and engaging elementary school integrated curriculum based on meaningful educator, student, family, and community involvement. PHSSA intends to provide the children of the ethnically and socio-economically diverse Richmond community with the choice of a fully accredited charter school focused on a premier environmental and arts education and social responsibility. Our classrooms extend into our gardens surrounding the building, our outdoor classroom, Reedy Creek and Forest Hill Park. PHSSA operates on a year-round calendar and has a simple, affordable uniform dress code. PHSSA operates under a non-profit Board of Directors.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Postgraduate Professional License and hold the appropriate level endorsement as a school principal. Must have at least three years of successful leadership and management experience as a principal, assistant principal, teacher specialist, administrator and/or supervisor. Must have instructional leadership skills to motivate and provide developmental opportunities for a diverse staff and student body. Experience in public education is preferred. Bilingual skills to include Spanish are a plus. Demonstrated instructional leadership skills and knowledge of how to effectively develop and implement integrated curriculum; the effective use of technology in the classroom; how to evaluate, motivate and develop staff; and how to provide students with an effective learning environment. Must have considerable knowledge of how to effectively integrate the skills and processes required by the Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) into curriculum. Ideal candidate will have experience in school planning, fiscal management, budgeting, and facilities management. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school staff, parents, PHSSA Board of Directors, community and business representatives, and central office staff.
 
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: 
  • Ensures that every student makes academic progress and achieves established yearly goals.
  • Ensures that the diverse staff and students experience a safe and nurturing school environment. 
  • Actively engages parents and the community in the life of the school. 
  • Provides educational and instructional leadership in a cooperative and collaborative manner, using problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  Responsible for developing, interpreting, initiating and implementing the vision, mission, goals and objectives of PHSSA.
  • Establishes with the School Planning and Management Team (SPMT) a School Improvement Plan with specific measurable outcomes. Ensures that the school community understands and supports the School Improvement Plan. 
  • Establishes with the SPMT appropriate school policies and staffing pattern for the school. 
  • Prepares with the SPMT a School Progress Report for the community, specifying progress toward objectives in the School Improvement Plan. 
  • Conducts meetings of staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school. 
  • Performs administrative duties including budget development and management, state and division reporting, personnel selection, training, evaluation, development and maintenance of efficient business procedures. 
  • Supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, student and staff handbooks and all other documentation appropriate to the school’s administration. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with local community and business groups to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs. 
  • Assumes leadership in the management of the school’s extracurricular activities; attends such activities and ensures the maintenance of a safe and secure environment. 
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with the PHSSA Board of Directors. Presents a monthly report to the PHSSA Board of Directors on the status and needs of the school. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Performs executive level leadership, management and program supervision at an elementary level school. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
 
REPORTS TO: PHSSA Board of Directors
 
SALARY RANGE: ​$91,900 - $174,000 / per year
 
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: This is a twelve-month (260 days) contract position, competitive salary and excellent benefits.
 
FSLA: Exempt
