Student Application FAQs
Is it really free to apply and attend Patrick Henry?
Like all public schools, there is no application fee and no tuition. PHSSA is another school choice within the Richmond Public Schools.

What kind of prerequisites do you need to attend PHSSA?
The school will be open to all children in the Richmond Public School District, grades K-5. Upon enrollment, the following documentation must be provided. Without all of these, your child cannot attend PHSSA:

Registered Students at PHSSA must have the following documentation:

  • School/Guardian/Student Contract (agreeing to 6 hours volunteer time per quarter);
  • Proof of guardianship (if applicant is not the parent or custodial parent);
  • Student’s birth certificate (children must be 5 years old by September 30, 2011 to attend kindergarten);
  • Student's social security card;
  • Proof of student’s current immunization(s);
  • Proof of student’s physical examination within the past year;
  • Verification of residency in the City of Richmond, Virginia by providing:
    • A Lease/Rental Agreement or a utility bill.
  • Registration Form
  • Statement of Affirmation
  • Transcript Release Form

What is the School/Guardian/Student Contract?
As part of enrollment, parents must sign a commitment to contribute 6 hours of their time each quarter at the school. Parental involvement is for the benefit of the child even more than it is for the school. That is why we require family involvement and that is why we will do everything we can to see that each family participates.

What happens if parents cannot fulfill their commitment to the school, due to work or economic issues?
We will do everything we can to help a parent who really makes an effort to be involved, but for whatever reason falls short of the required time.  Families may, for example, be able to meet their commitment by doing work for the school at their home, or have other family members to donate their time on the parents' behalf.  Economics should not be a factor in parents' participation. Parents will never be required to make any kind of monetary contribution to the school.

Can you describe a Progressive Quarterly Calendar and why PHSSA will be on that schedule?
The year-round calendar contains the same number of school days in the school year as traditional school calendars, but the school days are distributed more evenly throughout the year. Each quarter is followed by a break of at least two weeks. At the end of the school year (in summer), the vacation break is five weeks. Studies have shown that students perform better at a PQC school because they don't forget information over the summer, class time in the fall is not devoted to playing catch-up, and teachers don't get burned out. PHSSA will be offering intersession classes during the school breaks to address concerns of working parents. See more about the school calendar and hours.

Once my child is accepted to PHSSA, will we have to reapply every year?
Once you are in, you're in for the duration of your child's elementary education, if you choose to stay at Patrick Henry. So, if you apply this year for your child to attend 1st grade and you get in, you child will automatically have a space available to them for grades 2-5 at PHSSA.
